Modern hard drives have significantly increased in capacity compared to just a few years ago, with new technologies allowing for more storage space. However, this doesn't mean that all of this space is being efficiently utilized. Visual tools like DiskInventoryX and WhatSize help users to better understand how their hard drive space is being allocated. DiskInventoryX uses color-coded compartments to visually represent the different areas of the hard drive that are being used. On the other hand, WhatSize provides a numerical breakdown of the used space on the hard drive, displaying it by file, folder, and subfolder in bytes. Users can select a specific unit on the hard drive to analyze, and the program will organize the content in a descending list based on the amount of space each file or folder is taking up. This can be done for the entire hard drive or for just a single folder, making it easier for users to identify and manage large files that may be taking up unnecessary space.
